A downloadable game

I have taken the original 1970s source code of the 80 column printer terminal based simulation and converted it for the Acorn Electron, running in 100% text mode (40 column MODE 6)  ...No mainframe required! Yes, even the "graphical" title screen is PURE text mode; this was made possible by exploiting a cool loophole of MODE 6.

Whilst undertaking this conversion I have added numerous subtle enhancements, including "helpers" for navigation & photon torpedo targeting and long range scanner interpretation guide. I've re-engineered and refined many stats, charts & data outputs. I've also added some user-friendly features and extra summary data readouts. All whilst keeping to the exact gameplay experience of the original.

This program is 100% text based and uses ZERO cursor control codes, only carriage returns, just like the mainframe terminal-based games of the 70s.

This version is specifically for the Electron but will work on the BBC Micro. However, I've created a BBC Micro version that takes advantage of slightly higher available RAM and the colours of MODE 7. For this Electron version I have had to remove Galaxy names, mission briefing blurb and navigation (distance/direction) calculator module within COM.  This is due to the Electron's MODE 6 taking up 8k of available RAM as apposed to the BBC Micro's MODE 7 taking up just 1k!

For those wanting some extra in-game colour, check out the bundled 20 column MODE 5 version. Best appreciated on a proper CRT telly, it looks scrumptious (for a text-based game)!

All versions are CRT television friendly. No partially visible top row of text here!

I welcome comments, bug reports and questions.

Install instructions

Download the disc image onto your Electron's disc/SD using a disc image manager, or load it into an emulator, such as ElectrEm/Elkulator/BeebEm.

CHAIN "START" [return]

or SHIFT+BREAK to boot directly to the game!

...and also a bonus MODE 5 (3 colours in 20 columns) version. This has a similar aesthetic to the Vic20 version.  The MODE 5 version has shortened text dialogues & simplified "galaxy record" chart, but nothing is lost from the game itself.

I know the Electron very well. I understand that on MOST setups with a TV, even those fed with SCART video, the top line of text is partly chopped off. Therefore, I have disabled the top row via a special command; so even with a scrolling text based game like this, you will never have partly visible text at the very top of the screen. You're welcome!
